Details of Furniture Construction

David Surin Miniatures

After locating a piece of furniture I'd like to reproduce, my first step is to accurately measure the original and take a few pictures.

Then I head to the drawing board where I use the information gathered to create a set of working drawings.   My goal is to make reproductions which resemble the original piece as much as possible, hand-crafting each piece as a scale model of the prototype.

Back in the workshop, I choose select hardwood to use as the primary wood of the miniature creation, occasionally using minor species for less significant wooden components.   Then I cut each component to size and carefully shape each to its correct proportions, giving special attention to fine details.

I use authentic brass stock when the design of a particular piece of furniture calls for it, hand crafting the brass pieces to resemble the original.

Finally each wooden piece is optionally stained, then finished with several coats of a permanent finish, with appropriate surfaces hand rubbed and polished to a smooth finish.
